Book Review: Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

Dennis Lehane is an American writer with a loyal following, and many of his books have been made into movies (such as Shutter Island, Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone). I’d highly recommend this author for his original and distinctive novels – each one is different and a gem.

Live by Night is the story of Joe Coughlin who is a small time thief in 1920s Boston until he meets Emma Gould during a bank robbery. They begin a relationship, even though she is the mistress of one of Boston’s biggest gangsters. Joe is drawn into the mob world, and eventually has to flee Boston to start again – along the way becoming one of America’s most feared gangsters himself. This is a novel that has a great deal of drama, double-crossing and violence, as well as a passionate love affair at its heart. It captures the prohibition-era in America and lives lived outside the law. Fascinating and compelling!
