Book Review: The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan

December 21, 2015

The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan

A debut novel that made waves in the literary world, The Lifeboat tells the story of a small group of shipwreck survivors adrift in a small lifeboat in 1914. A brutal and claustrophobic story of survival, the action moves between the courtroom where Grace and several other survivors are on trial for their lives, and the events inside the lifeboat – a lifeboat that is overloaded and where sacrifices have to be made for the greater good. In the days they are adrift at sea civilised thinking is abandoned as people fight for their survival. There is no room for the weak in this boat of strangers, but just how far will people go to save their own life? This is a mesmerising story, one that is compelling and horrifying in equal measure. Charlotte Rogan is a talented writer and The Lifeboat is a controlled but moving portrayal of human fragility and weakness, but also the resilience of the human spirit in the worst conditions.
