The Dry by Jane Harper

Set in small town Australia during the worst drought of the century, The Dry captures the oppressive heat and tensions of a farming community when a terrible crime occurs on their doorstep. Local farmer Luke Hadler commits suicide after shooting his wife and child. Everyone thinks it was the daily strain of farming during years of drought that caused him to snap, but when Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk, is called on by the family to look unofficially at the case, he begins to have doubts. A childhood friend of Luke, he returns to Kiewerrra for the first time in twenty years, after leaving town because of another death…

This is an accomplished thriller that explores two mysteries, and as Aaron investigates the case, nothing is as it first appears. Suspenseful, compelling, page-turning and definitely a novel to recommend.
