The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The Goldfinch is the much anticipated new novel by Donna Tartt that has been a decade in the making. It is well worth the wait. This is a mesmerising, meticulously-written read, where you can tell that every phrase, every word, has been carefully considered. The Goldfinch follows the life of a young boy in New York City, Theo Decker, who survives an explosion at the Metropolitan Museum that kills his beloved mother. He has a haunting connection with a Dutch masterwork called The Goldfinch, that was displayed at the museum when his mother died. He becomes its unlikely owner. Having already been abandoned by his father, he is taken in by a friend’s family. But he struggles to make sense of his new life and the death of his mother is something that he cannot comes to term with. He is drawn into the art underworld, a world of gangsters, shootouts and deceit. Theo’s life almost completely unravels, but always at the core is the painting he has in his possession that steers his life in ways that are surreal and surprising. This is an astonishing read, one of loss and obsession – and the enormous power of art. The Goldfinch is a compelling novel of power by a masterful writer.
