Book Review: Secrets of the Tides by Hannah Richell
Secrets of the Tides by Hannah Richell
This debut novel is incredibly moving, a tragic family saga that lingers in the mind long after the final page has been turned. This is a story about a loving family that is torn apart by the events of one day and the secrets that each of them keeps from then on. Sixteen years on the youngest daughter, Dora, hopes for a new start when she finds she is pregnant. She reaches out to her mother, sister and father after a long period of estrangement. What she discovers, finally, is the truth about that day, a truth that changes the way she views her family and her life.
This truly is a superb novel. It moves back and forth in time and is told from the different viewpoints of the family until the explosive truth is finally revealed. Suspenseful and emotionally engaging, I couldn’t put this book down. The characters are compelling, the rambling family home perched high above the Dorset coastline makes the setting come vividly to life, and the plot line will surprise and move the reader in equal measure.
