Book Review: Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan
Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan
If you have had enough of vampires and werewolves, but still fancy reading something a little other-worldly then Immortal Beloved is the book for you. It’s a new young adult novel that will appeal not just to teenagers, but readers of all ages. Cate Tiernan has a distinctive and original voice and quickly creates a stroppy but highly likeable protagonist in the main character Nastasya.
Nastasya is an immortal and although she only looks about seventeen, she was actually born 449 years ago. Immortals are just like everyone else except that they live for a very long time and are almost impossible to kill. They are able to do ‘magick’, although Nastasya shies away from these potentially dark skills. Nastasya is a very troubled and lost soul, living a hedonistic lifestyle without meaning or direction. Her wake-up call is when her best friend cripples a cabbie and she decides to take up an offer of help from another immortal, River, made eighty years earlier. River makes good on her promise to assist Nastasya, but that begins a period of turmoil and discovery for Nastasya as she is forced to confront the traumas in her past. She also meets Reyn, who she is irresistibly attracted to, but he has secrets in his past even darker then her own...
Immortal Beloved is a fantastic book and one of the most original in the paranormal genre that I’ve read. It is clearly the start of a new series, so I can’t wait to read more to find out what Nastasya gets up to next. This is a great piece of storytelling full of love and tragedy, secrets and discovery – all written with flair and a slight undercurrent of dark humour.
