My beloved Nana
My beloved Nana recently died, aged 95. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She spoke a little about her life in my book LOVE IN AOTEROA, so I reproduce her words here in her memory.
On meeting her future husband:
I met my future husband at my parents’ home. I was visiting them and was out shopping and was out shopping with my mother when she said, ‘We had better get home. You dad has asked a young chap around from work.’ ‘Not another clod-hopper!’ I said, and yes, this was the man I was married to for more than 61 years!
On her long and successful marriage:
For many years we had to work hard as we were married just at the end of the Great Depression. To keep the farm we had to go without quite a lot, but it drew us closer together. Life was not a bed of roses. There were good times and not-so-good times. But through it all there was a feeling of our togetherness.
RIP Nana, you live on in our memories.
