Caring for others
Christmas is the perfect time of the year to look beyond your friends and family to the wider community. It is a selfless, God-like love that inspires someone to help the needy, feed the hungry or be a listening ear. Every person who cares for someone else in the community helps make the world a better place. We are not helpless in the face of violence, poverty, hopelessness, illness or addiction. Even as individuals we can make a difference and if individuals band together the results can be startling.
Here are some quotes from individuals I interviewed for LOVE IN AOTEAROA on the subject:
‘Helping other people is all about respect. And if you respect someone then you will get respect right back.’ Tane, 9
‘The act of giving freely to, and caring for, others is the lubricant of our society. It is the stuff that dissolves fear and aggression and makes people act towards others positively. I call it altruism. It is one of the hardest things in the world to do.’ Terry, 50s
‘If I did a good deed for 10 people, and they did good deeds for other people, then one person can make a difference. You just need to be able to stand up for yourself. You have to have the confidence to do something.’ Jamie, 10
