I want to reassess life because everything has changed. It would be a mistake to go back to how I was.
Mairi, mother of two young children, diagnosed with breast cancer

Unbreakable Spirit is a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of cancer. It tells the true stories of people who have survived cancer and of those who are terminally ill. It also shares the experiences of people who have had a loved one die from cancer and includes information from hospice workers, an oncologist and a counsellor.

When Karen McMillan’s parents, both of whom had lived with cancer, died in their prime, she started her own journey to find the answers to her questions from the stories of others. How do people cope with their own mortality? How frightening is the Big C? Are treatments improving? How does cancer impact on a family? What hope is there for the future?

The resulting collection of stories representing a wide range of circumstances will provide comfort and help to patients and their families.

Praise for Unbreakable Spirit:

Karen describes with clarity and compassion the hopes and fears of so many people, and the very real effects, both positive and tragic, that this disease can have on family and friends of those with cancer.
Kay Morris, Sharing Magazine

McMillan gives these stories vitality and has a clear empathy and admiration for each of the storytellers that is touching without being saccharine.
Rosie Andricksen, Xtra MSN Health

Thank you, Karen, for telling it like it is. This is a labour of love and it shows. It is also a ringing endorsement of the wonderful work that Hospice does. I know if you read Unbreakable Spirit, you will gain great strength from it.
Judy Bailey, Patron of North Shore Hospice
